Oakville, Napa, North Coast, California, USA Readers looking for power and muscle should check out the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville. A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot, its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a classic bouquet of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, sweet chocolate, and Asian spices. There is impressive fruit on the attack, good breadth, and plenty of muscle and tannin. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 15-16.
Tuscany, Italy The 2001 Oreno is simply a great wine. An inky ruby with purple highlights, intensely expansive and sweet on a fruit-rich nose which is loaded with smoky tar and graphite notes, it is packed and powerful on the palate with a density and concentration which are cunningly concealed by the plush and caressing texture, the superb balance and exceptional length of the finish and aftertaste.
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1999 Plenty of blackberry and mineral aromas and flavors, with hints of toasty oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. A beauty. Best after 2005. 1,105 cases made.
Rioja, Spain This single-vineyard estate-bottled Rioja has been a consistent winner in recent vintages. Not surprisingly, in such a great year as 2001, it performed fabulously well. Aged 20 months in primarily French oak, and bottled unfiltered, it is Spain's version of a top-flight Pomerol. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as an expressive bouquet of crushed red and black fruits, cedar, spice box, licorice, and smoked herbs. With great fruit, an opulent, full-bodied palate, tremendous purity as well as length, and abundant fruit and glycerin nearly concealing the moderate tannin, it should drink well for 8-10 years.
Stag's Leap District, Napa, North Coast, California, USA The gorgeous, dark ruby/purple-hued 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Stag's Leap offers scents of new oak, flowers, black and red fruits in a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, well-balanced style.
Wine Spectator Score: 91 Spicy and complex, with violet, black currant, blackberry and roasted herb flavors gripping the tongue with firm tannins. Toasty oak, earth and pointed mineral tones keep coming through a lengthy, firm finish. Best from 2004 through 2012. 796 cases made.
Wine Spectator 86 points A touch green and herbal, with an austere band of currant and blackberry, picking up an earthy, leathery streak at midpalate and finishing with a tart blackberry edge. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 14,771 cases made.
Forman The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is a big, rich, classic California Cabernet displaying Napa Valley's power and intensity allied to finesse and restraint. A blend of primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with 12% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot, and a dollop of Merlot, its deep purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of violets, creme de cassis, camphor, and hints of melted licorice as well as espresso roast. With supple tannin, an opulent, layered mouthfeel, great fruit, full body, and tremendous balance and purity, it can be drunk young, but promises to keep for 15-18 years.
no rating. The 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet is a stunning wine from the vintage everyone has been waiting for. Deliciously concentrated and gracefully classic, the flavors continue to unfold and mesmerize on this voluptuous Cabernet. The wonderful balance of smooth, rich, ripe varietal characteristics are so enjoyable...a winner.
Chateau Montelena The non-estate Cabernet Sauvignon, which is now completely sourced from Calistoga vineyards, provides a fine introduction to the Montelena winemaking style. Normally Bo Barrett includes 10-15% Merlot in the blend, and these wines often age for 10-15 years. The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is the sexiest of the three most recent vintages. A soft, deep ruby/purple-tinged offering with loads of black currant fruit as well as hints of damp earth, licorice, and underbrush, this silky-textured, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon will provide delicious drinking over the next 10 plus years.
Franciscan The 2001 Magnificat is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. It displays more force, depth, and delineation than the 2000, in addition to copious quantities of toasty oak, sweet, chunky, chocolaty, black currant flavors, and a medium-bodied, easy-going personality. It should drink well for a decade.
Wine Spectator Score: 92 Beautifully crafted, dense and detailed, with vivid currant, blackberry, exotic spices and pretty oak seasoning all tightly wound and sharply focused, finishing with a long, rich, concentrated aftertaste and fine-grained tannins. Remarkably graceful and elegant. Best from 2005 through 2014. 1,013 cases made.
