Descriptions of Wines in the $349 Case

1.  Buehler

Wine Spectator Score: 87
Wine: Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2002
Country: California
Region: Napa
Issue: May 15, 2005

Creamy dill and vanilla-scented oak is the lead flavor, but rich, ripe currant, plum and black cherry fruit folds in nicely, making this a solid effort if shy of the mark set in 2001. Drink now through 2009. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 4,400 cases made.

2.  2001 Bodegas Sierra Cantabria Rioja

Cuvee Especial
Rioja, Spain
Dry Red Table Wine
Wine Advocate #159 (Jun 2005)
 Robert Parker 93 points
 Drink 2005-2015

Obviously a great vintage makes all the difference as evidenced by the 2001 Cuvee Especial. This unfiltered 100% Tempranillo (30-year old vines) was aged in 60% American and 40% French oak before being bottled unfiltered. A stunning value, it reveals gorgeous aromatics (graphite, cigar smoke, sweet cherries and black currants, and loamy, dusty, earthy notes), a layered, opulently textured personality, admirable purity, decent acidity, and copious freshness as well as fruit. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for a decade or more.

3.  2001 Senorio de San Vicente San Vicente

Rioja, Spain
Dry Red Table Wine
Robert Parker 93 points
Drink 2005-2015

This single-vineyard estate-bottled Rioja has been a consistent winner in recent vintages. Not surprisingly, in such a great year as 2001, it performed fabulously well. Aged 20 months in primarily French oak, and bottled unfiltered, it is Spain's version of a top-flight Pomerol. It boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as an expressive bouquet of crushed red and black fruits, cedar, spice box, licorice, and smoked herbs. With great fruit, an opulent, full-bodied palate, tremendous purity as well as length, and abundant fruit and glycerin nearly concealing the moderate tannin, it should drink well for 8-10 years.

4.  2001 Finca Allende

Finca Allende
Rioja, Spain
Tempranillo (a dry red table wine)
Robert Parker 93 points
Drink 2005-2012

Bottled unfiltered for the USA market, the 2001 Allende exhibits a dense ruby/purple color along with a sumptuous nose of figs, black currants, blackberries, cigar box, and smoky vanilla. Full-bodied, rich, and opulent, with great purity, density, and length, it should be consumed over the next 6-7 years.

5.  2002 Bodegas El Nido Clio
Bodegas El Nido
Jumilla, Spain
Proprietary Blend (a dry red table wine)
Wine Advocate #159 (Jun 2005)
Robert Parker 93 points
Drink 2005-2016

This wine is just one more reason why the wine world is more exciting than ever!  The sensational 2002 Clio, a blend of 70% Mourvedre (60-year old vines) and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon (25-year old vines), exhibits a dense purple color along with a rich, sumptuous bouquet of toasty vanillin, blueberries, blackberries, roasted espresso, chocolate, and earth. Full-bodied, with sweet tannin, fabulous concentration, a multilayered mouthfeel, and a long finish, this is a tour de force in winemaking. It provides strong evidence of what can be achieved in this once backwater/boondock viticultural region of Spain. Anticipated maturity: now-2016.
